This blog is dedicated to all girls out there of  African descent who have stuck to their natural hair inspite of Western influence and the pressure to have straight hair. I think it’s only fair if I begin by telling you about my natural hair journey. Most of you may know about the Ghanaian system of high school education where young girls have to shave their hair before being admitted into secondary school. The least I say about that subject, the better. Anyway so right after secondary school, all of us girls are excited about the fact that we can begin growing our hair, fix weaves, visit salons and see whose hair grows fastest. Unfortunately, for us, relaxers have almost become a must in our society; everyone must straighten their hair that way. So I was also introduced to the system and my experience was terrible. Trips to the salon were dreaded, I would get cuts, scabs, sores and you name it on my scalp which always brought tears to my eyes. It was a really awful experience for me. My hair would almost always not relax properly because I couldn’t stand the pain and the chemical had to be washed off immediately. This continued for 3 years until I posed a question to myself which sent my mind pondering over the subject. I asked myself,” Do I ask someone to brush my teeth for me every day or once a week? No, I am supposed to visit the dentist every 6 months or so which I have never even done before. So then why do I entrust my hair into the care of so-called hairdressers which can be located at every nook and cranny of town. Well growing up, our mothers seemed to have neglected one of the most important aspects of womanhood. So we grow up seeing our mothers of to the saloon every Sunday evening for basic things like “washing” which can be done whilst taking a shower by oneself. It seemed quite understandable since they did not have the basic tools which should have been included in the dowry (hairdryer, a flat iron and rollers).  It seems tradition really does go on. My limp less weak hair which had eventually turned brown made me developed an interest in researching about hair care and over the past one and a half years I have been taking care of my own hair. The only time I go to a salon now is to get braids or weaves. I am therefore inspired to help those out there with basics on how to manage your God giving natural kinky curly coily hair.
